Spoon Carving

‘Carve a spoon in a day’

‘Learn Spoon Carving’

Carving spoons from fresh wood is a fantastic hobby that has become hugely popular recently. Turning a tree into your own practical and unique wooden spoons using an axe and special carving knives is inspiring, engaging and addictive!  No experience needed, you’ll learn step-by-step in a safe and fun atmosphere.

Carve a Spoon in a day‘ is a one-day introduction to the craft where we will work together carving from a log to a cooking spoon. You’ll take home a practical and beautiful utensil to use in your kitchen every day as well as new skills and fantastic memories.
Learn Spoon Carving‘ courses, held over two days, are for those wanting more time to really learn the skills involved in greenwood spoon carving. You’ll have plenty of time to practise each of the techniques and gain a deeper understanding of working with the tools and timber. This will allow you to carve more easily and efficiently and give you the confidence to continue carving at home. You’ll take home a range of finished items including more complicated pieces and have chance to cover extra topics such as spoon design, the best oils for wooden spoons and how to sharpen your tools.

Ash Splint Baskets

Ash splint basket course UK

An ash log is pounded to separate the individual growth ring layers which are woven into lightweight, elegant and strong baskets. Traditionally carried out in the US, Steve learned to make these baskets with April Stone-Dahl, a native maker from Wisconsin. You will learn about pounding, grading and preparing splints and the skills to weave a practical and beautiful fruit basket.
